Finding Paradise

Nature, Community and Deep Spirit

As I sit in our small urban permaculture homestead in Oregon, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, my mind wanders to the wisdom of Joe Hollis. A true pioneer in the world of natural and wild farming, Joe's impact on the plant community is profound, and his influence on students like myself is/was immeasurable.

Joe in his element - teaching, imparting.

On his revered homestead, Mountain Gardens, Joe's practice had a depth that is hard to find in today’s teachings. While many permaculturists/natural plant wisdom-holders still focus on the holistic , Joe's approach was truly profound - weaving together nature, community, and deep Appalachian spirit in a way that is both kind and powerful. His commitment to mentorship was inspiring, and his ability to nurture the potential in each of his students was a gift.

Joe’s modest dwelling

I've had the privilege of learning from Joe, and I can attest to the fact that his presence was truly alchemical(!). He had a way of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, of revealing the hidden patterns and connections that underlie ALL of life. Whether he was teaching about plant fibers and medicine, or simply sharing his wisdom and experience over a cup of tea next to the fire on his chair, Joe's presence was a reminder that the natural world is not just about growing food or building resilient plant systems (although homeboy did it best) – it was about cultivating a deep sense of connection with all.

Just a taste of his medicine cabinet

Although Joe left this earth in 2023, I highly recommend seeking his work out. And if you're already familiar with his work, I'm sure you'll join me in celebrating his contributions to all beings.
